The Butterfly Club (199 Cook St, BK)

Upcycle knitwear and learn how to crochet or kit!

Always wanted to learn how to crochet or knit? Want to spend a cozy evening with your circular fashion besties? Want that sweater you got over the holidays to find a new home? Join Reclypt at The Butterfly Club to do all that and more!

Reclypt is a hub that explores how we create change in the circular economy. A great way to do that is learning more about the yarn that we put on our bodies and how it impacts people and the planet.

The Butterfly Club is an online & IRL marketplace for slow fashion brands from around the world. Their Brooklyn showroom and event space is a community hub for the slow fashion community.

What to Expect: Upon arrival, participants will drop their sweater and/or yarn at the swap, then mingle with others and enjoy treats & refreshments. The events will start off with an informative and interactive panel discussion on yarn and how it’s related to a circular wardrobe, upcycle methods, and insights from yarn professionals.  Following this, the swap will open, while participants learn how to unravel knitwear! With your yarn (unraveled, new, or swapped) participants will join the knitting or crochet workshops to learn the basics. Participants can unravel their own sweater or one from the swap, then use that yarn to learn the basics of knit or crochet! They’re also welcome to bring their own yarn/yarn projects to work on too!

Participants are encouraged to bring knitwear and yarn they do not wear/use to swap for other knitwear and yarn they will use. Examples of knitwear include, but are not limited to: sweaters, scarfs, hats, etc. Swapable yarn must be as neat as possible (i.e. hanks, balls and skeins). Materials provided:

  • Yarn

  • Crochet hooks

  • Knitting needles

  • Seam ripper

  • Scissors

  • Needle

  • Thread

  • Knitwear swapables and mendables (limited)

Participants can bring their own materials if they prefer we just suggest it’s labeled to avoid confusion.

Reclypt offers these upcycling workshops to provide a taste of various circular fashion methods. We are working to provide more in depth courses for practice and mastery, however until then, participants should expect to walk away with:

  • A better understanding of various tools and materials

  • Accessible circular fashion practices

  • A new friend and/or resource

  • Improved awareness of garment construction

  • A feeling of accomplishment and community
